Billy Lane -another accident-Biker Killed

September 5, 2006

Hey,

We are reporting that Billy Lane was involved in an accident near his home in Melbourne Fla. This report came from the associated press so,we are taking it as accurate.

It is reported that Billy was drivng his truck and hit a 56 yr. old man, killing him. Billy was also hurt in the crash and we are scouring for more details. We are hoping Billy is o.k. and that no one else is in a life threatening situation. We don’t want to say anymore until we have all the facts. The report verbatim is on the beachcruiser.

We will say a prayer for Billy and the victim. We are saddened by an event that we saw as inevitable. It was just a matter of time and, Labor Day was the time. We sincerely pray that all of those envolved will recover without any permanent injuries. We will say a prayer for Billy and any others who got hurt.

    Wow,

What tragic news this is. It doesn’t matter who was involved, I hate to hear about these type of accidents.

What a shame,… it appears that if the preliminary press release is accurate, this will get pretty nasty before it’s settled. I’ll bet the attorneys are already lining up for this one!

My prayers go out to everyone also, the biker and his family, Billy, his passenger and their families included. God Bless!

    Hey Knuck and Bone,
No one takes any pleasure from something like this and if they do then they are bottom feeders.Billy is a controversial figure but he has an enormous following and he does a lot of good things. He is certainly among the flag bearers for the custom motorcycle industry. He is a talented guy who came from nothing to build an empire.People may have different opinions about his art but,no one wishes him any harm.We here at the beachcruiser have come to appreciate Billy. We listen to our readers and many of them who have met the guy really love him.
When we report about some of the “stunts” he pulls it is with sorrow that he seems to have a death wish.He has the bad boy image and he sure tries to live up to it.It seems that lately he has taken it to a new level. The drunken driving charge in North Carolina, his motorcycle basically exploding at Laconia and now this. When I say it was enevitable I mean in the same vein that Indian Larry (rip) was a disaster waiting to happen. His antics and seemingly who cares attitude about life eventually cost him his.It wasn’t just about where it happened. It was about when one does crazy, dangerous things it’s just inevitable that fate will catch up eventually.Standing on a motorcycle at high speed, doing stunts where if anything goes amiss you die is just over the top to me.There is some middle ground between fun and exciting and just plain crazy.I prefer to stay in the realm of the former.G-d save Billy Lane.

    Hey Beach,

My thoughts and prayers to the family of the victim and to Billy.

Know matter how much I like and respect Billy I believe that if he was negligent and driving wreckless he needs to be punished. Even if he was not drinking he was reckless and as a result took a life and that needs to be dealt with.

Now with respect to Indian Larry when you say “seemingly who cares attitude about life” I think, especially in Indian Larry’s case it should be stated that he lived life to the fullest and truely loved and enjoyed what he did even if the rest of us thought he might be crazy.

I am not sure that you can compare this specific incedent to Billy’s usual “bad boy” attitude. He was not doing stunts on a motorcycle, he was not upholding his rep before a crowd… If he was drunk at the time well that changes things (at least my opinion) dramatically. He made a mistake that ended in an unfortunate tragedy. He broke the law, killed someone, and should be punished for it.

On another note it will not be known for awhile but it kind of sucks to think of the backlash that will come from this to those of us that fight for bikers rights.

Everyday bikers are killed by automobile drivers. These drivers make mistakes that result in death or injury. In most cases there is little or no punishment, usually just a fine (unless alcohol is involved). Of course, they are not famous so you hear very little about it unless you knew the victims, live in the same town as the victims, or are involved in the fight to protect the rights of riders and educate the driving public of motorcycle awareness.

    Hi Hersey,Welcome Marty,

Look, to begin with no one — I mean no one — is not saddened by what happened. An innocent man lost his life and a brother is in deep trouble. This was not a purposeful act and I doubt anyone with a brain in their head would even think that. My comments about Billy were meant to point out that he has been really pushing the limit, tempting fate for awhile now. It seemed to me that his behavior was really out of control. I thought the North Carolina deal might make him think and maybe it did. Who knows? I see people doing what Billy did every day. We live in the mountains where most roads, especially the best riding roads are one lane each way. People flock up here especially on weekends and drive recklessly. I am an experienced rider and I am always worried that some fool is going to try and pass me or tail gate me, or do something stupid. It happens a lot. It has taken a lot of the joy out of riding. When I get on Archie 2 (my ride) I experience great peace, great joy, and a sense of freedom. This has been taken from me by people who drive recklessly, do not think, are loaded on something, have no concern about others and think it’s funny to “scare” a biker. There are those who just don’t give a crap about their own lives or the lives of others. It stinks that these people don’t seem to get stopped before they hurt or kill someone. Hardly a day goes by when I don’t read or hear of someone losing their life on a motorcycle. Well, it wasn’t like that in the day and it is symptomatic of what riding in America has become. I think there should be a lane or lanes for people who ride motorcycles and severe penalties. I mean jail time for people who recklessly hurt or take anothers life. I am fed up with all the bull and inaction by those who are supposed to make the roads a safer place to be. There are more bikers out there than ever before, most of whom just want to enjoy themselves. You shouldn’t have to risk your life anymore than we do. I support any laws and punishment for those who are taking our freedom — our rights — from us. That goes for bikers, cagers, anyone who has no regard for life. The sad fact is that most of these issues happen by cages killing bikers. They feel invulnerable so they drive that way. Hell, go kill yourself but leave me alone.

In so far as Indian Larry (rip) is concerned, I loved him. I loved his philosophy on life and I respected how he salvaged his life, his art, the man he was. Larry also rode at high speed standing on the saddle, took serious, unnecessary risk, and eventually it cost him his life. To do stunts like he did without any protection is eventually going to catch up with you. I don’t think Larry had an alcohol problem and I don’t think Larry was as reckless as Billy. The analogy is that both Billy and Larry pushed it over the edge and we have lost one and maybe both. We should at least learn something from all of this otherwise we all lose.

To all of those out there who think they know who Billy really is, talk to a few of his former employees. YOu can learn a lot about a person by the way they treat those that they rely on to help them get where they wanna go. Billy is a self-centered, egotistical narcissist.

  7. beachcruiser on September 8th, 2006 12:28 am

    O.K.

There are obviously people who like Billy Lane, dislike Billy Lane, and we will post everyone’s comments as long as they are repectful of our readers and appropriate for what this website stands for. People who can speak or write without being limited to a four letter vocabulary are always welcome here. We have our own opinions and our readers have theirs. We post them all and welcome passionate debate. We have had many thousands of people visit with us and so far only two comments didn’t make it for the reasons mentioned. Actually there were two people and about 4 comments. We think that is pretty impressive and we thank all of our readers for making this a great place to come to for information, conversation, ideas, opinions and news. Jack has an opinion and his is as valid as anyone elses. He said what he has to say and he says it as someone who either has worked for Billy Lane or knows people who have worked for Billy Lane. We take neither side as we know Billy’s work. We know him through his numerous T.V. shows. We know him from meeting him. But, we don’t know him as a friend or employer. We do not take sides on this one. We know what we know.

Right now Billy Lane is in deep doo doo. He has taken another’s life. We weren’t there and only know that a man died, that the police say Billy tried to pass a double yellow and that he may have been inebriated. There is no best case for the victim. He is gone through no fault of his own. We hope that Billy wasn’t over the the top and wasn’t totally reckless for his sake, the sake of those who care for him and his family. We won’t kick a guy when he’s down and we don’t believe for one minute that this was a purposeful act. We know, no matter what, that Mr. Lane’s life is forever changed. We also know that Mr. Morelocks life is over. The man was riding a moped, a moped. He was loved by many and he is gone. Mr. Morelock’s life is no less important than Mr. Lane’s and we would like our readers to remember that. We felt that Billy had some kind of a death wish because of how he lived and what he did. We hoped that the DUI in North Carolina would have caused him to re-think things. There might have been the same outcome there if not for dumb luck. Mr. Lane still faces charges for that incident. We are deeply troubled by what has happened and the effect this has and will take on the life we love. We hope someone, somewhere will learn something from this so Mr. Morelock will not have died in vain. This is a universal tragedy. We are thinking about what this means and what we can do. There is a futility in that as what is done is done and we can’t change it.

Not alot of sympathy for Mr. Lane if the reports are even 1/2 true. Passing across the double yellows in a 6500lb behemoth with the handling and brakes of a buckboard? How did he get a license?

Normally, in situations like this, the driver gets at most a slap on the wrist and an increase in insurance premiums. Killing motorcyclists has never been viewed as a crime in the US unless alcohol is involved.

Let’s step back from “Billy Lane Legend” and look at the facts:

A man who was driving an expensive Dodge pickup on the wrong side of the road (illegally), killed a motorcyclist who had right-of-way. The wealthy pickup driver was not cited and was released. Little mention of the dead motorcyclist who was just trying to save fuel by riding his motorcycle instead of using a car. He was trying to get home to his family after working his shift at a toll-booth. His reward was an early grave.

This is not news. It happens everyday. There is no “crime” because the majority of American drivers consider riding a motorcycle as a public nuisance, instead of a patriotic act to reduce our dependance on foreign oil.

Those weeping for the “poor” driver of the 10mpg pickup should be ashamed. If the drivers were reversed in this situation, I believe the response would be entirely different.

I will admit I find the “moped” comments comical. Guess that makes it more “understandable” since the the motorcycle has a small engine. I wasn’t aware Yamaha even made mopeds in 1983 for US sale. Most likely it was a “scooter” style motorcycle.

I will make a prediction that Billy Lane will suffer some financial hardship from his lack of driving skills, nothing more. See, he was in the “right” vehicle and the victim was in the “wrong” vehicle.

    Hey Pat,
Welcome to TheBeachCruiser. You are most welcome as you present the kind of person we love to hear from. You express an opinion intellegently and there is no hate in your message. People seem to feel very passionate about Billy Lane, one way or the other. We are fascinated by both sides of the equation. The man has a powerful presence and although we “don’t get it”, we are learning a lot about what people think and why. We reserve judgement on this issue as it is not for us to judge. We do know that a man lost his life. We do know that Billy Lane was driving the truck that killed him. The police and some witnesses say Billy crossed a double yellow trying to pass two cars. We don’t know if Billy was legally drunk although the police say they suspect he was. We don’t really understand why Billy was not cited for anything if any of the above is true. I have never heard of an incident like this where no one was charged with anything and allowed to go home. Maybe someone could enlighten me on this.

I do know that this incident, as you say, is really bad for us as motorcycle enthusiasts. I think you have expressed that very well by what you have said. We are looked upon as an inferior bunch. We are looked upon as outlaws, trouble makers, noise makers, a lower class. Our lives don’t seem to be worth as much as others in some elitist attitudes out there. Billy hurt all of us no matter how this turns out. I want to point out that the way Billy chooses to live is his choice. He is not representitive of many of us. He is a brother but if he did the things they say he did he should face justice.

I am proud to be a motorcycle enthusiast. I am proud of what we as a family represent and what we do for others. I will fight for our rights and for the law to protect us from the haters and killers just as they protect others. We have the right to ride safely and to celebrate life as we choose. We have this right unless we hurt others. We have the same rights as any American and in my opinion we are a cut above.

I hope you visit with us a lot Pat. We welcome you to the BeachCruiser family.

To interject my .02, Lane’s website was down most of the week aparently so that his webmaster could remove all pix of him drinking (rather hard to do as there are considerably less pix now!). When the site was reposted, it’s interesting that there is no mention of the accident or the victim, either on his mainpage or under the “news” section. Howeverm the new section sure lets you know that they will be vending at Biketoberfest! Typically Lane likes to post cheezy tributes anytime someone he knows dies (IL, Johnny Vasco). Wouldn’t you think he would be all over the place expressing his regret for the accident and the loss of Mr. Morelock’s life? Not a word. Instead, he appears to be trying to overhaul his image to save himself. I think his actions thus far speak volumes about the kind of person he is. If it was a simple accident (or even a lapse in judgement where no alcohol was involved) wouldn’t you think that he would be a bit more public about the situation instead of trying to cover-up years of public drunken arrogance. It seems that this is one publicity opportunity that Billy is passing on- hard to believe.

However the toxicology tests come back, one thing is certain, Mr. “I appear in public as the approachable guy next door supporter of all things american” Choppergod is exhibiting cowardly and pathetic behavior. I hope the people who idolize him and buy into his humble, armed services loving, regular joe standup-for-what-you-believe-in schtick remember this next time they shell out some dough for a “Money is Fake” Chopper Kingpin T-shirt. It is certainly clear that money is anything but fake to Billy.

    Hey Babs,
Welcome to the beachcruiser.I had not even thought about the photo’s.To be honest with you I hardly ever go to Bill’s website.I go as an occassional routine we do here at the beachcruiser but, that’s about it.
I did comment that his website was down and I didn’t know why.I will defer an opinion as you have expressed yours so eloquently.I was thinking Billy hadn’t said anything on orders from his lawyers(s).I hope that’s the reason.I try not to think of the absolute worst of a person but I suppose anything is possible. We’re all going to find out so,we’ll just have to wait and see.I did notice that Billy only lists Biketoberfest in the apperances part of the site.I wouldn’t go there if that was the reason as, Billy may not make it.
A lot of people adore Billy so I want to believe he is an alright guy.We have had a few folks defend him even on this but not the wave of fans that usually step up to his defense.Perhaps, even his army of supporters are “over it” after this.I don’t know but,Mr. Morelock is dead and Billy was driving the truck that killed him. That is the one indesputible fact in all of this and it can’t be changed. The folks who are doing the Choppers Inc website have really pulled out all the bells and whistles. The website is one of the best I have seen in terms of the art and technology. If,as you say, this is a marketing ploy It won’t work.Billy has North Carolina and Gerald Morelock to account for and one hopes no matter which way it goes, the result will be fair and unbiased.Billy needs G-d on his side this time so,I hope he is visiting with him(her) as often as possible as to his faith.I hope he has that to keep him sane. This is a pretty tough one to live with.My thoughts are with Mr. Morelock and his family as they are the victims here.If there is anything positive in this I just don’t see it.Eveyone loses here.I will listen in Vegas to hear what might be said by the builders and fans in attendance. We will report on this until there is some resolution.
Thank you Babs for commenting. We welcome you here at the beachcruiser and hope you will continue to share your opinion on this and anything else that’s on your mind.We mean it.We are anxious to hear the absolute truth once it is determined.

My .02 says Babs Jackson is a obviously a Billy Lane Hater. Money is Fake and Chopper Kingpin shirts are irrelevent. The thought of cheesy tributes to johnny chop and indian larry is really disrespectful. You should be ashamed of yourself.
Billy is at fault. A man has died and a tragedy has happened. It’s a sad day for familes and friends of all those involved and all of us who ride motorcycles.
If for some reason alcohol is not involved, he still made a very bad decision and will be in a world of hurt so don’t worry babs his long dread lock hair and tattoos should help land him in prison.
Say some prayer’s with Mike Brown(the saint who stole the hubless wheel idea) and wish bad things for billy because that will make everthing better.
The beer guzzlin, arrogant camera lovin bum has made some horrible choices and all the haters should be very happy now.

Iowa, I guess you bought a few of the shirts, huh? And who should be ashamed here? I’m simply questioning Lane’s behavior at the moment. From the looks of it, he should be the one who’s ashamed. I’m not seeing anything about it that would suggest he is remorseful for what has happened. I suppose you know him? And I don’t mean that as a jab at you- it’s a genuine question. I see all kinds of people who don’t want to admit that their hero might be less than he makes himself out to be. I also see all sorts of people coming to his defense that claim to have met him once at some rally while he was signing a shirt. Does that really make them worthy to assess his character? I never suggested he’s a bum. I certainly don’t have any problem with his tatoos or dreads. You seem to be the one quick to make assumptions about me and my personal tastes, etc ( an observation, not a flame war invitation). If anything, I think he is a sad character with a drinking problem of considerable magnitude. What I do have is a problem with his silence. I too am certain that his lawyer is advising against it. But why change the content of his wesite to exclude all photos of him drinking (which were numerous). And where is the guy who so proudly lives by giving the finger to the “man” and espouses the virtues of honor? If he were innocent, I would hope his lawyer would be savvy enough to suggest some damage control. My point is this- others on the web have already taken measures to set up resources for Mr. Morelock’s family. These are people I assume have never met the man. Yet the one directly responsible for the tragedy has yet to even make a public statement. That is fact- not opinion. I did look up to Billy at one time. Much more than you know. I think Billy is an amazing design talent, but current events suggest that he is much different than the guy we see selling DVD’s of himself giving bikes away to servicemen in uniform. Attack me if you wish, I just suggest you might want ot reconsider who you idolize in the future. And thanks Beach for this forum, and your caring concern with your mod duties.

    Hey Babs,
Thank you.We began the beachcruiser to offer a website unlike what is out there. We really believe in the people who have the same passion we do and think the majority are good, stand up folks. The biker fraternity is mostly a great place to hang out and someone will usually watch your back. There are more caring, loyal, good people here than anywhere else in my opinion.Bikers for the most part give of themselves, never turn their back on their brother or sister, and believe in this country.
It is very important to me and the train that we “walk the walk”.I suppose we want to prove a point. Most people who have come here have not let us down at all. This is what drives us to work so hard.We have met a number of people, some well known, some not.We are humbled by the experience. We really want a “family” and we feel we are on our way to achieving that. It’s a big family, bigger than we ever imagined. We hope you and others like you come by often so we can share who we are and what we think. We fully intend to make this a special place.
    Thank You again

We don’t really understand why Billy was not cited for anything if any of the above is true. I have never heard of an incident like this where no one was charged with anything and allowed to go home. Maybe someone could enlighten me on this.

Beach with regard to the case here is your answer.

    From Florida Today.

Morelock, who was wearing a helmet, was killed instantly in Monday’s collision, which the Florida Highway Patrol is investigating. A blood-alcohol test was conducted on Lane and sent to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement state lab in Orlando for evaluation. Test results, part of the traffic homicide investigation, could take up to eight weeks to return, although agents are asking for the tests to be given priority.

No charges have been filed in the case.

“Just the fact that he crossed the double yellow line and hurt somebody, let alone killed him is enough. There is no doubt in my mind that if it was me or you we would be in jail,” Byron Morelock said.

However, Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Kim Miller said investigators are making sure they build a strong case before filing any charges.

“Let’s say we write him a ticket for crossing the yellow line and he goes to court. He could pay a fine and that would be it. We couldn’t go back and charge him with the most serious charge in this case,” Miller said. “The goal is not to put him in jail as soon as possible. We have to prove criminal intent, that he knowingly passed the double line and that alcohol was involved.”

I spoke to a police officer friend of mine who I have introduced to Billy in the past and he gave me the same explanation. I hope that answers your question. I might add that he asked that I pass on to Billy that his prayers go out ( as do mine ) to all involved in this tragedy. I did hear from Billy today and he appreciated the prayers as they are most certainly needed for the Morlock family, the young lady who was a passenger, and for him. May God give strength to all. “If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him.” (Luke 17:3)

  17. Knucklehead on September 11th, 2006 9:12 am

DJ, Thank you. (Luke 17:3)is right on. It is what someone that does not know thinks would be hard to do. Forgiving him is the easy part. Forgiving onces self is the hard part. We all know Mr. Lane made a bad move. I’ve prayed for all three familys. It will be Billy that is going to have a lot of praying to do and soul seaching. Even when the facts are in and justice is served, we still need to say a prayer.

    Thank You D.J.,Knuck,
We feel the same way.We know that Billy is not a bad person. We know this is an enormous tragedy. We know that Billy got caught up in an image, a reputation, and it got out of control. It’s not the first time that fame, money, success, has taken a person from their senses. We only wish someone or something could have prevented the event. We have written about our concern for Billy. We saw this or something else coming.People called us haters. We’re not haters. We were hoping that someone close to Billy could have reasoned with him.His fans, the hangers on,did not help him by egging him on,adoring the ever more outrageous things he was doing. We are sad, very sad that it came to this.We can only pray there is some light at the end of this tunnel and that something other than punishment can come of this.
We too pray for all involved. Two brothers and a sister have been hurt, one killed and we do not turn our backs. We must remember however that Mr. Morelock and his family are the ultimate victims here. There is no winner, only a feeling of futility.

I don’t idolize Billy Lane. He is not my hero. I’ve never met him, but I’ve heard More sh1t talked about him than anyone else. I ride Stock bikes. If I chose to buy a Custom it would come from Jesse James, but he is not my idol or hero either.(I do have mutiple west coast chopper t-shirts) I didn’t feel that this next comment was appropriate.
“Typically, Lane likes to post cheesy tributes anytime someone he knows dies(IL, Johnny Vasco).”
I guess I’m just sick of all the billy lane negative talk. As far as drinking goes, it should obviously stay off the road. Billy has failed along with countless other americans who get picked up for DUI.
He has to be held responsible for this. As far as not being on the road is concerned, Drinking, whether in moderation or excess should be up to the person consuming the beer as long as they mind there own business. So taking pics at bike rallies with Jack Daniels is not a crime. I’m refering to “years of public drunken arrogance.”
It’s obvious that Billy has problems and no one has anything good to say. I’m gonna say a prayer for him, and not worry about buying dvd’s or t-shirts,or his fabrication skills.

  23. beachcruiser on September 11th, 2006 4:33 pm

    Hey Rider,
No one is accusing anyone of anything. You have the absolute right to your opinion as does everyone.
In so far as Billy is concerned, when you become a celebrity, when you promote yourself in magazines,t.v. shows, rallies, etc you become part of the public domain.Billy knows this and encouraged it.People have this “thing” about him as he is larger than life and obviously represents something to a lot of folks.I am assuming it is the rebel, the outlaw, the hard driving biker, whatever.Billy seems to have the largest following of anyone in the industry. He represents the motorcycle brethren in his way. Some people like it,some people don’t.
I would disagree that everyone hates Billy Lane.It has been my experience that many more people like and look up to him than dislike him.Again, when you promote yourself as Billy does,it comes with the territory. His presence and demeanor is what has made him rich and famous. It is obvious that that is what he wanted. You don’t see Hotch or Perewitz,or Fairless,or Martin,or so many others doing what Billy does. This is Billy’s way and that’s why he is a lightening rod.
This incident is not so much about Billy as it is about wrecklessness, neglegance, and what can actually happen if a person goes too far.It could have happened to many and probably has happened to some. It’s much bigger because it is Billy. We don’t wish Billy harm, quite the opposite. Most of what we have read and seen is that there are some who just don’t like the way he represents the “life”.There are those who don’t like some of his work.So what? Many more love him than not.Billy worked his butt off to get to where he was and that deserves respect. This has nothing to do with that.
When you compare buying shirts and the Johnny Chop tradgedy,we think that’s over the top.As we read it Babs was saying that it is odd that nothing has been said on his website about what happened. We think he has been advised not to say anything. We are quite sure that if Billy had that day to live over again, things would have turned out differently. The sad fact is,he does not and Gerald is gone.
Rider, try and keep in mind that this is a very emotional topic.People are going to express themselves with emotion. The important thing as we see it is to remember that we are all brothers and sisters even when we disagree. We do not believe that Babs was attacking or dis-respecting anyone. We think she was upset about what happened and expressed it in her way.She didn’t try to intimidate anyone, she didn’t call anyone names.
There is an expression”those who live by the sword, die by the sword”.We can only hope and pray that Billy survives this ordeal and gets another chance.I’ll let our readers decide whether they think he deserves it.Ultimately, none of us has the right or the authority to make that decision.Well,if it comes down to a trial some of us will.
Rider we wish none of this had ever happened. We wish we were talking about leaky gas tanks, tattoos, long hair, and mtorcycles. We know Billy made a big mistake,a very big mistake. We know it was not puposeful but Byron lost a brother and his son lost an uncle, and Gerald is gone.Reality can be a bummer.

This is just an all around sad situation. Who among us has not made a mistake that, but for the grace of God or good luck, did not end in tragedy? I do not know Billy Lane but he is a human being, and all human beings make mistakes. I do believe that if he were not a decent person, he would not be so well liked by the other people in the industry. I do not like to see someone kicked while they are down. My heart goes out to all involved.

I have always liked Billy Lane and thought he was a great bike builder. I did have the change to see Billy Lane this year in Sturgis. He was getting on his bike in front of the One Eyed Jack Saloon in Sturgis. He appreared to be in NO shape to be riding a motorcycle. Traffic on Main street was being held up as the group of people that were riding with him stopped to wait for him. One of the guys had to get off their bikes and go over and push Billys glasses up on his face as they were hanging off. Billy finally got his bike started and went to pull out and about hit several bikes. He was in NO shape to ride! I know everyone has the right to do what they want but when you are a celebrity like Billy is that kind of PUBLIC display and lack of respect to other bikers on the road is sad! I wouldnt blame Billy all himself. The other group of 6-8 guys that were riding with him should have STOPPED him from getting on a bike! There was a huge crowd of people watching this incident and making comments. It is sad that the death of someone has had to come of this and this be the possible wake up call he needs to not drink and drive!

    Hey Sdrider and Zee.

Welcome to the beachcruiser. We are happy to see you here and to listen. We would agree with what both of you are saying as there is truth in both opinions.

It is becoming quite apparent that Billy has a serious drinking problem and that none of his so called friends did anything about it. Ultimately Billy is responsible for his own behavior just like all of us. There should be consequences for behavior and Billy will find out about that eventually. What Sdrider said was unknown to me. To be honest with you I am getting really sick of hearing about Billy and his drinking and what appears to be unconscionable behavior. I mean how much do you have to hear? Dui in N.C, Driving drunk in Sturgis, Killing an innocent man in Fla (we don’t know if he was drunk yet), and who knows what else? There are lots of very nice drunks who (don’t mean it) when they beat up their woman, punch the crap out of someone, cause harm to another, and at worst kill someone. There was the guy in S.D., a mayor or Senator I believe who killed a biker while drunk and had a long list of D.U.I’s. I mean how can we as a community complain about drivers killing and maiming us when one of our own is doing exactly that? I’m not talking about Billy the friend, Billy the builder, Billy the good person. I’m talking about Billy the drunk who drives drunk and never learns. I’m talking about a man who should be held responsible just like me and you. I am talking about a man who should not be allowed on the road. I’m talking about a man whose friends aren’t worth a bag of crap for not stopping him or at least confronting him. With friends like these, who needs enemies? Rick Fairless wrote in an article that when one of his customers has too much he either takes their keys, ties down or locks up their bike, and if need be finds them a place to sleep it off. He just does it. He has even had some sleep it off at his home. He wrote this way before this tragedy. That’s the kind of friend I want.

I met Billy Lane at the VTwin Expo, seemed like a real genuinely nice guy…I’ve heard a lot of people say that about him, I also think he happens to be one of the best builders out there. The biggest problem for him is he will soon find out how few real friends he has, all the shallow hangers on and star struck groupies are going going to scatter like broken glass and find some new false idol to hang on to.

  30. Zee on September 13th, 2006 11:24 am

I agree it is stupid to drink and drive, but I have done it, my husband has done it and most of my friends have done it. The thing is that when you are drunk you don’t think you are drunk. You need someone looking out for you. This is where I have a problem with everybody now racking on Billy Lane. Some of the same people who were probably in the crowds at some of the events cheering him on are now on the Bash Billy Bandwagon. We don’t even know for sure he was drunk. I have been behind the Soccer Mom handing her kids Happy Meals in the back seat and driving 20 mph while cars lined up behind her and have said “F” this and passed when it probably was not safe to do so. Luckily, I got by with it (and will probably think twice before I do it again). The point is, everybody is saying Billy should not be treated differently because he is a celebrity. I agree. I also don’t think he should be judged more harshly because he is a celebrity. As for his money, from what I hear, he worked hard and earned it. This is to be admired not envied and hated. Self-promotion is just good business sense. Unfortunately, being so well-known may now be working against him. I have deep sympathy for the Morelock family as nothing is worse than losing a loved one no matter what the circumstances. I also have deep sympathy for Billy Lane and his family as this was the harshest wake up call and will be very hard to deal with without everyone turning on him. As for Billy not making any statements, I work as a paralegal for a law firm in Kentucky and the first rule to all clients is “keep your mouth shut”, don’t talk to the press, don’t talk to your best friend and don’t talk to the pizza delivery guy because anything you say will definitely be used against you. Anyway, sympathy and best wishes to all.

    Hey Zee,
I hope we are being fair with Billy. We are not turning our backs and I hope that is clear.Billy is a good man with a drinking problem. We don’t envy his success,we admire what he has done.We know he works hard, very hard.It seems that celebrities sometimes have a big problem living up to the image. We know Billy would never harm another on purpose. We know about his good works. We admire those. We don’t think our readers are bashing him.The over riding feeling is sorrow. We are hoping that in some way, somehow something positive can come out of this tragedy. We wrote several months ago that we were concerned Billy had a death wish. That’s something to be concerned about, not a bashing. His behavior was getting over the top and we knew something bad would happen if no one could reach him.We were hoping that N.C. might have made him think. If he had gone to court there and gotten some small punishment maybe it would have been a wake up call.As it turned out,the court date got pushed back to october and this tragedy happenend.
No one here wishes Billy any harm.We pray for him and the Morelock family. This is just something that might have been prevented if someone could have reached him.As you say,it probably was easier for us to see the pattern of his behavior than it was for him to see it himself. That’s where family and friends might have stepped in.Where were they?

  32. Sdrider on September 13th, 2006 5:58 pm

I agree with beachcruiser. I am not bashing him nor do I think he is bad person. I just think he is person with a problem and I hope he gets the help he needs. I know what it is like I have lived with an alcoholic for 10 years and he finally stopped drinking and has been sober a year. I always had the same fears when he would take off on the bike but luckily it did not happen to him/us he stopped and got help before that. But thanks to his friends and support of his friends he still rides and goes to motorcycle rally’s and events where drinking is going on. I wish the best for Billy and his family in this trying time!

They were telling me for years. Then one day I looked over at me 3rd son and realized I was screwing up. I did not want him to see what his older brothers had seen growing up. 25 to 50 bikes in the yard and a bunch of dope smoking, loud foul mouth, drunks standing around. It took I bit but I did it. Did not have a drink for the better part of 5 yrs. I have a beer or 2 now and stop. And that little guy did turn out different. College bound and all. I’m alive and no one got hurt. I was lucky. Many a day could have not been. As a pretty little gal I just told that to recently said someone was looking out for me. I believe that. I do hope all turns out for Billy, the Morelock family and the gal we have heard nothing about. Pray too that all is well with her.

I was at the bike rally in NC. I have seen Billy at several events, but he has always been on stage or signing autographs. In NC he was just walking around trying to check things out like the rest of us. I had my cousin with me and she does not ride and had never been to a bike event. The thing that amazed her was that Billy couldn’t take 5 steps without people reaching out and stopping him for an autograph or to talk to him. He didn’t seem to mind but she felt bad for him. She couldn’t believe people wouldn’t leave him alone and let him enjoy the event. When we saw him he did not appear drunk but it was early evening.
I feel very bad for everyone involved in this tragedy. If he was drinking, I wonder how some of the fans that scramble up to him at events to buy him a shot or give him a bottle of liquor feels?
Hopefully Billy will stop drinking or at least not drink and drive. He might want to think about getting some new friends. I don’t have a problem trying to stop any of my friends from driving when I think they have had too much.
If he doesn’t go to prison the greatest impact he could have on people would be for him to go to schools and talk to kids about drinking and driving. With his dreeds and tats he could make a huge impact on some kids because they can relate to someone like him. He could also turn the Blood Sweat and Gears tour into a tribute to our soldiers as well as a way to collect donations for families that have been affected by a drunk driver.

    Hey JB,
We have many aticles in our archives which tell the story as reported in the newspapers and by the police. We also have listed the charges against Billy Lane before and after some were dropped. We also reported on the d.u.i. that Billy Lane was arrested for in North Carolina only a short while before the truck he was driving killed Gerald Morelock.Lane was acquitted in N.C. for lack of evidence. We never could understand how he got away with driving the wrong way on the highway but,he did.He did get his license suspended for refusing a breathalizer test in N.C. and that suspension was in effect when Gerald Morelock was killed.
The facts as we know them are as follows.Gerald Morelock was driving a street legal moped and was wearing a helmet when he was struck and killed.Billy Lane was the driver of the truck that killed him.Billy had a passenger named Erin Derrick who was injured along with Mr. Lane.Billy went to the hospital where he was forced to take a blood alcohol test that he didn’t want to take.He had no choice as the police by law can force the test when there is a vehicular homicide. He left the hospital within 24 hrs. After several weeks the results of that test were that Mr. Lane had a blood alcohol level of .192.The legal limit in the state of Florida is .08.In other words Mr. Lane had considerably more than twice the limit of alcohol in his system when the accident occurred. There were eye witnesseses at the scene who said that Mr. Lane crossed a double yellow line to pass two or three vehicles when he struck and killed Mr. Morelock. It was reported that emt’s who went to the scene to help said that Mr. Lane reeked of alcohol.Mr Lane was driving on a suspended license. It was reported by police investigators that Mr. Lane had spent a good part of his day in at least two local bars.Mr. Lane was arrested and released on $15,000 bond.Mr Lane was supposed to face the judge on Oct 27 but that was moved to November 9th.Mr Lanes attorney has demanded a jury trial. All but the most serious charges have been dropped for reasons only known by the Brevard County Florida’s D.A.At present Mr. Lane faces a maximum 15 yr. prison sentence. He was facing 25 yrs. before the D.A. dropped the additional charges.
Those are the facts and the evidence as reported by the newspaper, the police dept, and the official charges brought by the D.A.The absolute facts are that Mr. Lanes truck struck and killed Gerald Morelock.Mr. Lane had to have crossed the double yellow line(no passing) to do that.He was driving with a suspended license,he was legally drunk by a large margin when he killed Mr. Morelock. The rest are eyewitness reports as written in the newspaper or attributed to eye witnesses.
I hope that answers all your questions.Welcome to the beachcruiser.

  41. dave on November 16th, 2006 1:10 am

A blood test, ordered by Florida Highway Patrol officers investigating the accident, revealed that Morelock’s blood alcohol content was .133. Police say Lane, who survived the crash, had a .192 blood alcohol content — or more than twice the legal limit of .08.

  42. Train on November 16th, 2006 1:30 am

Okay, Dave… so what is your point?

Please don’t take this as confrontational. We know now that Gerald was also driving impaired. Yet, he doesn’t get to spend the holidays with his family ever again and Billy most likely will. It’s not an easy scenario. Life rarely is.

We sincerely hope that Mr. Lane will turn this tragedy around into something positive. I’ve heard enough people speak well of him to feel sure he has the “intestinal fortitude” necessary for such a task. As for the Morelocks… they will have an empty place at the table for Thanksgiving. I’m not saying that to try and be melodramatic. It’s just a reality.

From what I have read, Gerald lived a good life. But, he could be continuing that journey if not for a tragic event on September 4th… We all go when it is our time to go. But, like so many others who are taken in their prime, Gerald could have been around many years longer to enrich others’ lives.  Mid fifties is way too young to die.

Okay, Knuck… Call me Polly again:-)… I can’t help it here. It’s just a shame.

This is my first visit to your site. I must commend you on your September 10,2006 at 9:59 PM comment to Iowalowrider. I like the way you defended Babs on her right to state her opinion. It was well said and I like the fact you do not allow intimidation. I was a regular reader and poster on Mike Odom’s blog. I love the guy and his lovely wife Cindi Bear. That blog has become a free for all. Iowalowrider has nasty and very intimidating remarks. He has been allowed to do so. Lord help anyone who does not agree with him. It is not interesting or fun to read that blog anymore especially the part regarding “Hearing date set for DUI”. You have a great site. I wish I would have started reading it sooner. It is not a name calling, bad language being used and threats made blog. I like how you back up what you post. You do have a very unique site that has been a pleasure to read and it is so nice to see somebody not afraid to put Iowalowrider in his place. Looks like he must have got mad at you and went elsewhere to be nasty and intimating. Have a good day. Prayers to Gerry Morelock’s family. Hopefully, justice will prevail. Sadly, nothing will bring Gerry Morelock back.

    Hey Fatboy,
I want to thank you for commenting as you have.It is extremely gratifying to hear when someone new actually gets it!! The things you have pointed out are exactly why there is a beachcruiser to begin with. We found the same experience you mention on every website, every blog we visited. We decided to do something about it.This is a website that we created to provide what we were looking for. Anyone can come here and voice an opinion, express themselves, ask a question, share an experience etc. without having fear being attacked by a faceless coward. It seems that we are alone in that philosophy. We have found that there are web masters who not only allow that kind of intimidation but actually encourage it.We will NEVER allow anyone to come here for the express purpose of using every four letter word they can think of, to spew hate, and to attempt to intimidate those who disagree with them.
We have received our share of hate mail from people such as you have mentioned and naturally, we don’t like it. We have considered and are considering legal measures for those webmasters who allow slander on their their websites. We will stand up for ourselves and what we believe is right.
Thank you again for your comment and know that you are welcome here anytime. We welcome people like you with open arms and the knowledge that NO ONE will be allowed to try and intimidate you. We encourage debate and want to hear opinions no matter what they are. We don’t expect nor demand that anyone agree with ours. Debate is healthy when the playing field is level. This playing field is level. I remember reading that when there are no rules you get anarchy. We have one basic rule and that is to respect each other.
Thank you again Fatboy!! You have made my evening.

“BEACH” Thanks for your nice reply. I will no longer be commenting on Mike Odom’s Blog. Nor on Cyril Huze’s blog. We all put our breeches on, one leg at a time. We should all have to face Mr. LAW on earth the same way we will face God on Judgement Day. Class action suit against webmasters who allow this behavior on their sites, slandering and name calling deserve to be sued. Sure sounds like a very good idea. Ask around, talk to lawyers and if you think it would work and that there is a chance to prevail, put up a way to donate through PayPal or a address to send a lawyer money. Check out local Law Schools as well, some will take cases for the students to get practice while a Law Professor is in charge. I would like to be the first to donate. I believe in respect for one another. Like Norm Fernandez Biker Lawer says on his site….he has no room in his life for jerks. Most important, I feel badly for Mr, Morelock’s family and they really had a tough time through this past holiday season. Worst of all Lane goes on as if nothing has changed. To this day “lines” of people will wait for hours to get his autograph and picture. People still buy Choppers Inc. merchandise to pay for Lane’s idea of the “DREAM TEAM LAWYERS”. I am glad I made your night, because it made me feel better as well.

    Hey Fatboy,
Thank you again. We appreciate your concern and support. It takes guts to stand up against a lynch mob.The net is still very new and unlike the written media and the broadcast media there is a lot to be dealt with. We belive that the same laws apply to the internet as the other mediums but know of no one who has challenged the type of behavior we are talking about. We didn’t get into this expecting to run into slander, abuse, attempts at intimidation etc. We were surprised and angry. We hold ourselves to a higher standard and have the will and the means to defend ourselves. I really don’t think that some of the webmasters who run these websites understand that they can be held liable for what they allow. We have been in contact with those who either personally or by use of their websites are supporting the slander of others. We are hoping they wise up as there is a reason for the word moderator. There is NO responsible website that does not monitor what is said first to protect themselves and second to protect their audience. There will be consequences for this type of red journalism I assure you.
We like Mike Odom. We think he is a thoughtful guy who does his homework. We had a few problems in the beginning but have learned to respect one another. We even link back to our websites. I have never read the blog you are referring to so I can’t comment on that.If this kind of behavior is permitted there then I hope Mike does something about it. I do enjoy the lawyer’s blog and I do read that.I agree about the “jerks”.I think your idea of not going to and not supporting these websites that offend you is a good one. I also think it is a good idea to bring this issue into the open so that others will be aware and hopefully exercise their right to not support these people. The kiss of death is to not visit and not comment. If enough people do that there will be no audience and no forum for the Hitler youth to espouse hate and intimidation. We believe in all the freedoms of which freedom of the press is one but, there are rules. We WILL exercise our rights believe me. It’s a pity that we are forced to even consider that.
We are in touch with Byron Morelock and he suffers when he sees people say hurtful things about Gerald and his family. We fully support Byron and his family although we do have questions about the suit against Chrysler. We consider Byron to be a friend.Billy Lane will be judged by his peers and we will see if the justice system works. We have an opinion which we have modified as information becomes available. I will say that we have conducted 14 podcast interviews so far and have asked each person how they feel on the matter. We ask and listen as these industry icons actually know Billy either pretty well or very well and we respect their opinions. All of that is on the family jewels.
In conclusion let me say that we are happy, very happy that you are a family member. You are always welcome here as are those you know who want this kind of experience. We welcome all of them.We are committed to what our vision is.We’re in it for the long run.

We measured up my ride for the new handlebars and they will be installed this week. You never really know how things will feel until you ride some.I can say that seated and still it feels like a big improvement for comfort and control. I’m not sure about the look cause it is different.I really liked the drag bars look but I felt a change was needed. I’ll still have em in case this doesn’t work out. That’s what custom is all about. Make it feel and look and run the way you want it too. Now, if I had only won that big lottery! Oh well, I’m just going to have to work harder.

REALITY CHECK - Here’s some relevant points that no lawyer, cop, MADD nutter (aka cops) nor Media Mobster will ever admit. (1) BAC/BAT scores are never valid for crash victims, due to internal injuries mixing intestinal alcohol with blood alcohol, and a rising score as alcohol is digested after the crash. So the test score at the time of the crash might be 20% of the test score, even without internal injury. Dead victims can only get an accurate test when blood is drawn directly from the heart, which is never done. (2) “Alcohol” machines never test for alcohol, and are never guaranteed by the manufacturers to test for alcohol. (3) Driver licenses are voluntary civil contracts extorted at gunpoint by police state death squads, thus are invalid, thus no court has jurisdiction for traffic citations, including “driving on a revoked or suspended licensed”. Driver licenses can only be required for commercial drivers “for hire”, such as truck drivers and taxi drivers. Every person has a Constitutionally guaranteed God-given Natural right to travel by any mode of transportation, including driving cars or riding deadly horses. Scooter riders don’t need driver licenses in 50 states. FAA does not require pilot licenses for ultralight pilots in 2007. (4) Insane DUI laws result in crash victims prosecuted for first degree murder, which carries the death penalty or life in prison in NC. (5) The so-called “legal limit” for so-called “blood alcohol” is 0.00% (ZERO POINT ZERO ZERO PERCENT). This is true in all 50 states, as published in govt driver license handbooks. THERE IS NO PASSING SCORE FOR BLOOD ALCOHOL. 2 airline pilots in Florida were sentenced to 5 years in prison for the “DUI crime” of drinking coffee in the airport. Likewise so-called “field sobriety tests” also have no passing score, and stone cold sober cops can never pass such a test in a court room in front of a jury. You can drink 24 beers in 24 hours and have a 0.00% BAC/BAT for all 24 hours, according to all driver license test books. (6) So-called alcohol “rehab detox” loony bins actually increase the rate of alcoholism, addiction, overdose, suicide and murder, due to rampant medical malpractice, and are mere police state death camps used to loot insurance funds. (7) Medical doctors are the leading cause of death in USA, murdering over 2.5-million US citizens every year, with immunity from arrest. How many crash victims survived the crash, to be murdered in death camps, with the deaths statistics then blamed on “drunk drivers”? (8) Illegal alien felons murdered over 40,000 US citizens in USA since 9/11/2001, often by DUI homicide, yet police sell them fake ID “driver licenses”, and refuse to arrest and deport them during traffic stops. (9) Every prisoner in jail costs taxpayers $50,000 a year, destroys the “offenders” family and business, destroys the business economy, and prevents the “offender” from paying restitution to the victim. So keep these thoughts in mind when demanding that police state death squads take all your Constitutional rights at gunpoint.

Got something to say?
