Big Bear Choppers and S&S 100 Inch Sled

Kevin Alsop of Big Bear Choppers phoned in a series of component specifications to Michael Read, S&S engineer, for a newly revamped S&S Super Sidewinder engine exclusive and proprietary to BBC. The result is a quieter, smoother running engine.

By using a square configuration of 4.00 inches of stroke with 4.00 inches of bore and utilizing proprietary compression ratios and cam timing as well as reciprocating weights, this internally reformed engine runs incredibly smooth while meeting all the strict EPA requirements. Additionally, proprietary cam timing and compression ratio helps this engine to run cooler and the type of rockers help cut down running noise. This engine produces around 110 lbs torque with 95 HP, so power is not sacrificed.

The Super Sidewinder engine is marketed by BBC with the name of S&S-BBC 100 SMOOTH and is premiered in the new factory built ready to ride Big Bear Choppers production bikes available on selected motorcycle dealership’s floors. Big Bear Choppers will also use this engine standard in their famous line of unassembled bikes and custom builds. The new engine is exclusive to BBC for all of 2006.

I wanted an engine that is the best of all worlds—reliability, power and comfort,” said Kevin Alsop, founder and president of Big Bear Choppers. “And when I say reliability, I mean for the bike as well as the engine. While looking like any other S&S engine outside, the inside is changed up and the essence is its low vibration. Vibration is the worst thing for the integrity of a motorcycle and its components. Plus, we all know high vibration causes pre-mature rider fatigue. Eliminate vibration and you eliminate problems,” concluded Alsop.

“It was refreshing to bring to market a purpose built engine that not only has the performance S&S is know for, but does it so with the rider comfort in mind,” said S&S Sales Manager Michael Read. “This combination in our square-design engine offers power deliver that feels almost like a rubber-mount in a solid mount frame.”

Working with BBC is always fun for us,” said S&S president, Brett Smith. ”Kevin and his team are always looking to do something different from everyone else and it always seems to be just the right thing at the right time. I don’t think this 4×4 engine project will be any different. S&S was glad to be involved and provide the engineering needed to make his request a reality.”
