Podcasts-R.O.T.

May 31, 2007

Hey,

We will do a podcast interview with Doug( The Viking) Keim tomorrow. We will do a podcast interview with the legend Donnie Smith next week and we will be bringing you lots of news and entertainment.

The R.O.T. begins in Austin, Texas. Rick and his crew will be there as will many thousands of Bikers. The R.O.T. is now a major event so, we are anxious to see how it goes this year. Rick’s youngest is graduating H.S. so he will be running back and forth.

The Beachcruiser has set another record number of visits for the month of May. We’re growing and we thank all of you that support this website. It’s just going to get better and better. We are really looking forward to Sturgis this year. We’re going to try and give you some great stuff and have a good time. It’s not easy to do both. Yes, we will attempt to record and publish some great video. We’re not taking it off you tube. We’re doing it ourselves.

We’re on it so stay tuned. Things are eerily quiet on the Billy Lane trials but we are on that as well.

Revved up to Rally

May 31, 2007

Starting today, the bikers descend on downtown for a little R&R - ride and relaxation

Thursday, May 31, 2007

You might have already heard them rumbling into town or felt the vibrations from farther off. And you might have noticed a few more leather jackets blowing up and down Interstate 35.

The bikers are here.

For the next four days, Austin will host the Republic of Texas Motorcycle Rally, one of the largest motorcycle rallies in the country. Grand Funk Railroad will play, the Budweiser Clydesdales will trot through, celebrity builders will unveil new rides and, most importantly, thousands of motorcycles will parade up and down Congress Avenue.

It’s a sight to see.

But if you’ve seen it and want to get away from the roar of downtown while staying in the spirit of things, there are plenty of options. We’re fortunate enough to live smack in the middle of some of the most beautiful biking country around. We spoke to three local riders about their favorite routes in Central Texas (and check out our “Hill Country Super Ride” on the next page) and their take on the rally.

ANGELO DIMARIA

Bike: 1998 Harley-Davidson Softail with a wide-tire kit, 18-inch ape-hanger handlebars and an up-sized 1450cc engine.

Number of years at the rally: Four years.

Favorite ride: We like to take (FM) 1340 out to Marble Falls and then head up to Llano and go to Cooper’s BBQ, which is awesome barbecue, and then we head up to Enchanted Rock and then down to Fredericksburg. Another one that’s really good is to take RM 12 south out of Dripping Springs or Hamilton Pool Road to Wimberley, and then from there you can go around to Canyon Lake and back.

How long have you been riding?

Since I was 12 years old. I started off riding mini-bikes, just homemade dirt bikes. I graduated to something with gears when I was 14, and I had a motorcycle before I had a car. My parents weren’t too happy about it.

How did you first get to the rally?

I’ve been in Austin for two years, but I was in Louisiana before, and I came from Lafayette in 2004. I lived across the street from a club, and they’d been talking about it for three or four months before, and I decided I wanted to go out with them. It took about six hours. We had a blast. It was probably one of the best rallies I’ve ever been. I’ve been to Daytona and Laconia and a few other small ones.

Now I have friends that come to town, and it gives me the chance to take them out to the Hill Country and show them around. I take those same trips many times of the year, but it’s always fun to take new folks out and show them around.

Do you ride in the parade?

To tell you the truth, I just get down there early to watch it come through, but after 15 minutes it gets a little boring. But since we’re early, we get to park in front of our favorite establishment and just walk up and down the street and socialize. It’s really cool to meet people that come in from all over Texas. They’ve ridden for 10 hours to get down here.

Where BAKER drivetrain is throwing support at in Sturgis.

May 30, 2007

Baker Drivetrain has our irons in fires all over Sturgis this year! We’ll be on Lazelle Street, out at the Buffalo Chip, the Broken Spoke, at the Kids and Chrome dinner and charity auction, the Builders Breakfast, down at Grease Monkey Mayhem, and on the Black List. Here’s the who, what, where, when and why!

The Buffalo Chip:

Above the ‘Chip’s partying masses, Baker heisted the burnout pit and dubbed it The Baker Burnout Box!!! We then we put tall torches on it for a spectacle of burning flames and burning rubber. We’ll be raisin’ hell in the middle of this staple American motorcycling destination. So follow the smell of melted rubber, ride your bike on up the ramp and show everyone at this historic Sturgis location what you’re made of! You won’t miss it: it’ll be the only burn-out box in Sturgis to sit high in the sky, surrounded by flaming torches and clouds of sweet, hot, burned up tires. Fill your lungs with scorched glory!

The Broken Spoke:

Baker is always so proud to back Jay Allen and the Broken Spoke, in all locations. This year in Sturgis is no different. We couldn’t be more proud to lend our support to Jay and the largest bar in Sturgis: the Broken Spoke, as he pushes forward helping Sturgis to grow bigger and better every year.

Kids and Chrome:

Baker will be working with the Children’s Home Society, the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum, and Nick Genender from New York City Choppers in an effort to raise funds for these deserving causes. Mr. Genender and the fellas over at NYC Choppers will be building a custom motorcycle for the 2007 Kids and Chrome Raffle. Baker Drivetrain was more than happy to donate one of our 6-Speed, Right Side Drive Transmissions to this project.

We will also be donating our new Function-Formed King Kong Klutch for the auction to take place at the event, scheduled to be held Wednesday August 8th, 2007 at the Spearfish Convention Center. We hold this event near and dear to our hearts. Lisa and Bert Baker see no more deserving or worthy causes than that of a home for children in need, and a place dedicated to our American motorcycling heritage. For more info check out: www.kidsandchrome.com.

Builders Breakfast:

Baker Drivetrain is joining forces with the Builders Breakfast this year at the Broken Spoke on Lazelle St. in Sturgis. This event, scheduled to take place the morning of Tuesday August 7th, 2007, is always a big draw for fans of the art of bike building and designing. Baker will assist the Builders Breakfast in their goal of raising funds for Make-A- Wish Foundation, South Dakota at the 2nd Annual Breakfast. For more info, check out: www.choppersinc.com.

Grease Monkey Mayhem:

These builders are all together in one location to celebrate the art of bike building, unity among builders, and to have a good time – and Baker Drivetrain wouldn’t miss out on this party for the world! We’re looking forward to checking out the builders all camped out in the Grease Monkey lot during Sturgis this year, and lending our support to these guys who love Baker transmissions almost as much as we do!

Rupert’s Ride for Kids:

We all know Rupert from his time on the ole’ t.v. as the winner of the show “Survivor”, but did you know that he has a passion for charity and a love for motorcycles? Well he does, and in Sturgis he is hosting a day long ride with food and entertainment at the end, all for a good cause: children in need. We support Rupert in his efforts in Sturgis, and hope everyone finds the time to join in the fun for a worthwhile cause.

The Black List:

Aw man, we’ve done it this time! Scout and Trish are always trying to make Baker Drivetrain just a little more punk rock, and we couldn’t be missing out on a bitchin’ opportunity like this! The Black List is, in its own words “A ground-breaking entertainment and events platform bringing a high-octane mix of customs, extreme sports, art and music designed to redefine and revolutionize rally entertainment”. We see it as a good f*ckin’ time! In hopes of a bike venue that caters toward a more youthful culture, we’ve been waiting for something that is more suited to BAKER’s Creative Department, and has elements of basically all things rad. This is it. We’ll be there tearin’ it up, and even giving away a transmission on stage where all this takes place: the Full Throttle Saloon.

LAZELLE STREET

And what would Sturgis be without Baker Drivetrain set up in our usual spot, in the corner of the Samson Lot, where 5th and Lazelle come together? Stop by, pick up one of our scandalous Baker 2007 Calendars, a catalog and some stickers and talk with us about all things Drivetrain. Our booth will be full of the guys who build and sell these trannys every day. We’ll also have lots of our new innovations, including the members of the Function-Formed family of products there, for you to see first-hand and drool over.

So… think Sturgis is ready for us?!

For additional information, visit www.bakerdrivetrain.com, or call BAKER Drivetrain at the number above and ask for Scout or Trish in the Marketing Department!

Honda The Way it Used to Be

I must confess this is a little before my time. But, I bet there are many family members out there who can remember this and get a chuckle out of it.

Motorcycle Riders Hit the Streets of D.C.

“Ride for Freedom” Mirrors Cycle Ridership and Cycle Deaths

May 27, 2007 —

The streets of Washington, D.C., roared with the sound of thousands of motorcycles on Sunday during the 20th annual “Ride for Freedom,” sponsored by the Rolling Thunder veterans group.

Over the years, the ride has grown steadily. Tens of thousands of bikers now come to the capital to make noise and draw attention to veterans’ issues, including the plight of the missing in action.

The growth of the ride mirrors the growth of motorcycle ridership nationally. And as the number of motorcycles on the road rises, so does the number of motorcycle deaths.

A recent government report found motorcycle deaths have more than doubled in the past 10 years. Nearly 4,800 people died last year in motorcycle accidents and 87,000 were injured.

Mary Peters, the U.S. secretary of Transportation, is one of the six million Americans who rides motorcycles. She is campaigning to get every American who rides a bike to first put on a helmet.

“Of the motorcycle fatalities over the last year, 700 of them would likely not have died had they had a helmet on,” said Peters. “I hope I’m setting the right kind of role model by wearing all my safety equipment, that I check out my bike before I leave, that I ride with others so that we are more visible.”

But the government says 14 percent of motorcycle helmets will not actually protect a rider in a crash. Marketed as “novelty” helmets, they look like the real thing, but offer little protection. Peters encourages every rider to use only a helmet certified by the Department of Transportation.

A research lab in Los Angeles tested certified and uncertified helmets. It found a certified helmet will prevent concussion in a fall from six feet. Uncertified helmets were not effective in a fall of just three feet.

“When you put [the novelty helmet] on your head, it will protect you from the rain, but don’t fall on it because there is nothing there that will absorb any impact,” said Harry Hurt of the Head Protection Research Laboratory.

So why do so many riders opt for less safety?

“Some people just believe in flouting the system,” said Harry Avila, a Harley Davidson rider. “They think they’re cool.”

Other people, Peters believes, just don’t know any better. Those are the riders she is hoping to reach.

The Smoke Out East

May 28, 2007

Hey,

In a couple of weeks we get the Smoke Out in Salisbury N.C. This event is brought to us by The Horse. I understand it is a good event and a good time. Me and Train would attend except for a personal history for me and the fair city of Salisbury.

I was married to a woman who was born and bred in this fair city. I spent a lot of time in Salisbury and, I do mean time. I went there for holidays and visits because The Family was there. Now let me tell you, when I say family I mean lots of people. There was Eddie and Minnie and Ellen and Matt and Henry and Lamar and Dick and Betty and Freddie and Myrtle and Bobbi and Mark and Betty 2 and Mary and Gary and more than a dozen kids. Oh, and then there were the guests.I would say there were at least 25 each time.

Now Salisbury has the Broadcasters Hall Of Fame, every fast food restaurant known to man, one movie theatre and a lot of Churches. I liked going up there at first cause I come from a small family and this one was anything but small. You see, there are always lots of folks who will travel for a free meal and you don’t want to get on the bad side of a family that big.

My marriage was bad man! I mean talk about the “bloom falling off the rose”. I had three step-kids who I raised, housed, fed, and educated. I thought it would be cool but it wasn’t.It was a fantasy that became a nightmare.I’ve lost track of all of these people but, it would be a good bet that most of them are still in Salisbury doing absolutely nothing. It was like that then and I can’t imagine why it would have changed.Salisbury was my version of hell so, I don’t go back.Too bad cause the Smoke Out is supposed to be a good time.

I am ten years removed from the scene. It’s interesting that the smoke out is there cause in all the years I went there, I never saw a motorcycle or a biker.Ten years is awhile so maybe things have changed.I don’t know.

That’s it folks. A little bit of history and an explanation of why we don’t go to the smoke out.If you happen to be in the neighborhood let us know if the event is any good.Last year Billy Lane got arrested for D.U.I. there ( not convicted) which doesn’t surprise me a bit. Long live Salisbury North Carolina.

A  not for profit chapter of the National Cruiser Club USA.  We are sponsoring a Jellybean Fundraiser Ride on July 14 , 2007 to raise money for the Washington County Indiana Shop With A Cop program. Every penny we raise goes to purchasing warm clothes and toys for children in need at Christmas. Last year in our County alone Shop With A Cop helped over 1000 children. We are asking for help with donations of motorcycle related items for raffles and door prizes at the event. Any help with donations would be appreciated so much. We need all the help we can get getting the word out on this fundraiser.
