Seventh Annual Las Vegas BikeFest, September 27-30

July 31, 2007

Cooler Weather and Hotter Times: A Biker Bash Only Sin City Can Handle. More than 40,000 bikers and motorcycle fanatics will hit the highway to attend the seventh annual Las Vegas BikeFest, a national motorcycle and biker rally held in Sin City September 27 30, 2007. This four-day motorcycle extravaganza will host some of the world’s most skilled custom motorcycle builders for an exhilarating competition, along with more than 300 of the greatest manufacturers and distributors of motorcycles, parts, accessories and apparel, according to Harry Schwartz, president of Full Throttle Events, one of Las Vegas BikeFest’s partners.

“Las Vegas BikeFest 2007 guarantees to be a wild weekend featuring some of the biggest names in the custom bike industry,” says Schwartz. “We scheduled the rally two weeks later this year in order to take advantage of the cooler weather. However, we anticipate even hotter times because the Las Vegas BikeFest is an opportunity for people to immerse themselves in the biker culture with extreme events like Artistry in Iron, a custom bike show, Harley-Davison demo rides and an unforgettable Mr. and Miss Las Vegas BikeFest Competition.”

The fourth annual Artistry in Iron, Master Builder’s Championship will feature 25 of the world’s most progressive bike builders in an “invitation only” peer judged competition. Sponsored by Hot Bike Magazine, many of the most renowned master builders including Gard Hollinger, Jesse Rooke, Jim Nasi and 2006 Artistry in Iron winner, Greg Westbury, will have the chance to show off their artistry talents when they unveil their newest designs. Special autograph sessions will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday.

On Saturday, September 29, there will be more than 150 of the most spectacular bikes in the country displayed along four blocks of the Fremont Street Experience as part of the Custom Bike Show sponsored by Tribal Motorworks. Each year this display is an exciting opportunity for bikers to showcase their brilliant bikes. There will be a $5,000 grand prize for the winner of the “Radical Class,” along with other awards like the “Best Sportster,” “Best Chopper” and “The People’s Choice Award.”

At the Vendor Village more than 300 top vendors will display custom bikes, production motorcycles, parts and accessories and apparel. Major motorcycle factories, including Big Dog Motorcycles and Yamaha Star Motorcycles, will be there Thursday through Sunday to exhibit their newest models.

Additional events will include Harley-Davison demo rides, an unpredictable Mr. and Miss Las Vegas BikeFest Competition, $100,000 Poker Run and a wet-and-wild Bikini Contest. Also taking place this weekend is the 3rd Annual Race for Kids Charity Event, a scenic ride through the Las Vegas countryside to help support the efforts of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.

General admission to the Vendor Village is $10.00 for the weekend. For hours and more information, visit www.lasvegasbikefest.com, call toll-free 866-BIKEFEST (245-3337), or email info@lasvegasbikefest.com.

Sturgis

July 30, 2007

Hey,

Train and me are off to Sturgis tomorrow. We have to fly to Minnessota rather than ride because of all of our equiptment. We are excited! We are going to the builders breakfast, The Lichter show and party, The world motorcycle event and much more. We will be taking photos, taking video and maybe an interview or two. We will get an idea of the state of the industry, see the beautiful Black Hills, and participate in the arguably best rally in this country. We hope to see our friends and to make new ones. It’s going to be hot and we know it.All of our sponsors will be there and we hope to pick up some more. We will share everything with you. We will try and report each night and do the big rap up when we get home.

We have one problem. We are flying Northwest Airlines from Atlanta to Minnessota. Northwest is postponing a bunch of flights due to pilots doing a ” sick out”. So far we are o.k. We won’t know for sure until tomorrow.

Jolly Roger Customs

July 30, 2007

This is the bike that we were going to build for the Million Dollar Build Off that was canceled. This bike was built using a Hawaya Racing top fuel 197cc motor converted to gasoline. It also holds over 5 gal.

of gasoline. We don’t know the horse power because it demolished the dino built to test the motor twice. Johny Vickers of Hawaya Racing said it ripped the jig apart at 220hp and wasn’t even close to its capacity.

We put lot of thought into this bike and I hope everyone enjoys it.

Look for it in Sturgis at the World Show.

Knievel Custom Cycles Announces Strategic Alliance with Hardbikes

July 29, 2007

Anybody remember back in the day when Knievel used to jump over all those things (barrels, buses, canyons…)? Well, look where the family has wound up!

Hermitage, PA, July 27, 2007 –(PR.com)– Knievel Custom Cycles, LLC and Hardbikes, LLC announced today that a strategic alliance has been entered into between the two companies. Under this agreement Hardbikes will become the exclusive motorcycle manufacturer for the Knievel Cycles brand. 2005 Backlight Custom Motorcycle - Mercury Customs
Detail-Driven Beauty

By J. Ken Conte

Hot Bike Magazine, April 2007

Joe Takai formed Mercury Customs in 2004 to develop high-end custom motorcycles and components. After spending the first part of his life as an engineer, mechanic, and visual effects and graphics professional, he wanted to go back to his automobile and motorcycle roots. Although he spent years doing everything from developing a visual arts school in Maine to leading teams of visual artists in Hollywood blockbusters such as Titanic, The Matrix Reloaded, and The Matrix Revolutions, he always wanted to get back into designing and building machines like the ones that inspired him as a young man growing up in Detroit. Joe began rebuilding and redesigning cars in his parents’ garage at an early age. His first project was working on a neighbor’s ‘68 Ford Mustang and sticking a high-performance V-8 under the hood, giving it nearly 400 hp. Later on, he bought motorcycles, redesigned or restored them, then resold them after riding them for a few months.

With his mechanical and automotive capabilities in his back pocket, Joe continued with other interests and challenges, and in 2004, when he came back to what he loved, he had additional knowledge and experience that helped him put a very different twist on custom bike building. All bike builders believe attention to detail is important-if not the most important part of building a bike. Joe is different and believes that details are custom bike building; his bike pictured here, “BlackLight,” showcases his developed eye for detail.

A potential customer approached Joe about building a bike that would fuse two of Mercury Customs’ most popular bikes: Ronin and Hard Eight. It needed to have the sleek elegance of Hard Eight and the not-so-subtle toughness of Ronin, minus the samurai sword. With that objective in mind, Joe set to work using his proven customer service method. After the initial introduction and interview with the client, Joe made sure the customer knew exactly what he was getting into by drawing up conceptual drafts, which called out specific design details of the bike. The combination of a brushed-aluminum finish, complemented by flat-black and red coloring, offset the oversized theme on this mean, Pro-Street racer. Once they agreed on the design themes and accents, Joe put together a build sheet that detailed all the parts to be bought and fabricated, along with their associated costs. Then a deposit was collected, and orders were made with outside vendors. Finally, they began to fabricate everything else in-house.

One of the coolest things about Joe and Mercury Customs is the fact that they have a real-time, online gallery the customer can check out to watch every stage of the build from home. When each major piece was complete, it was posted on a web gallery that only the customer had access to, so the build could be followed from home. The bike came together while the customer looked on, as the mockup was done and everything bolted together to make it a rolling chassis. Joe then took some preliminary geometry and fitment measurements with the customer astride his new bike. The last step was final assembly and delivery, both of which took place at the shop or the customer’s house. When the bike was delivered, Joe took care of all the necessary fitment issues to personally tailor BlackLight to the customer.

0705_hbkp_11_s+2005_mercury_customs_backlight_custom_motorcycle+front_wheel

Pro-Street-style bikes such as BlackLight highlight a resurgence of aggressive and balanced styling. BlackLight pays homage to the “less is more” attitude with subtle design cues that are carried throughout the bike, not just with the finishes, but also in the wide stance it presents front to back, from the fat Pro-One, Wide Glide frontend to the 250mm tire in the rear. Both wheels boast Exile quarter-inch spokes, and the brushed oversize Exile aluminum exhaust shows that Joe and his customer had a vision for this bike from the beginning. Although some design elements were changed once it was put together, this bike was thought out right down to the nuts and bolts. The one thing that did change while it was in final assembly was the outer primary cover, which was initially brushed. Joe told us, “It distracted people from the rest of the bike; it was just too much brushed stuff in one concentrated space, and we believe in balance in every aspect of bike building. We sent the outer primary cover and some bolts out to be black powdercoated and black anodized. This created the negative space that was needed to complement the rest of the bike.”

Mercury Customs was founded on high-tech design, and Joe utilizes the skills he learned in Hollywood to pave the way for a new type of bike builder, one that caters to a more modern customer, demands excellence, and is unyielding when it comes to performance.

Lane, carmaker, family of victim OK settlement

July 28, 2007

BY KEYONNA SUMMERS
FLORIDA TODAY

DaimlerChrysler, motorcycle builder Billy Lane and the family of a Sebastian Inlet park ranger killed in a Labor Day accident that police say was caused by drunken driving reached a confidential settlement, the deceased man’s family and lawyer said Friday.

“There has been an amicable resolution,” said attorney S. Sammy Cacciatore, who represented Gerald Morelock’s family. “It was the family’s conclusion that this was in their best interests.”

The settlement came 10 months after Morelock’s mother sued Lane, 37, and DaimlerChrysler — which provided Lane with the Dodge pickup he was driving — in connection with the fatal crash in which police said Lane crossed a double-yellow line and hit Morelock’s motorcycle.

The suit alleged Lane, who police say had a blood-alcohol level of .192 — more than twice the legal limit — the night of the accident, and Daimler-
Chrysler, which the family said used Lane’s fame to advertise its vehicles despite his prior driving citations, were liable for auto negligence.

Cacciatore refused to release details of the settlement, citing a confidentiality clause.

Byron Morelock, the victim’s brother, released a family statement thanking supporters.

“My family may not have made it through these hard times if it wasn’t for your caring and sympathy,” Morelock wrote.

Lane still faces a criminal trial on DUI manslaughter charges. There will be a hearing Sept. 21, but a trial date has not been set.

Settlement Reached Morelock VS Lane

July 27, 2007

Hey,

A settlement has been reached between Daimler Chrysler, Billy Lane and the family of Gerald Morelock. The settlement is secret as is the case in most of these cases. I am actually relieved that this faze is over. We have been saying for months that we couldn’t imagine a criminal trial taking place AFTER a civil suit. As it turns out we were right. When you think about it it is very interesting. You CAN’T say it is an admission of guilt by Mr. Lane and Chrysler. You CAN say that Mr. Lane and Chrysler either thought they would lose in court or that this is a cheaper way to go than the legal process. We will never know for sure but that is almost always the case and we can’t imagine why it would be different this time. According to Byron Morelock the settlement was reached after many hours of contensious discussion. We do know that this was not the first time they sat down and we do know the settlement will not bring back Gerald Morelock. We know according to Byron that the family has at least ended one part of this ordeal. He went on to say in Florida Today how much he appreciates the support that he and his family have received. We will have no further comment on the right or wrong but if it brings some relief to the Morelock’s we are glad.

The road is now clear for the “Big One”. Billy will stand trial on criminal charges supposedly this fall. That could change as it has several times. We just hope that a decision is reached that is fair. Everyone has a different opinion of what fair is and I am quite sure that not everyone will accept closure. We think that for Billy and the Morelock’s closure is important. We still feel terrible about all of this and we wish it never happened. No decision will make us feel good. There are no evil people involved. We hold that no one is served at the destruction of another.

Train will post the article from Florida today shortly. We at The Beachcruiser are “on it” first or damn close.
