Boyd Coddington-Tribute

February 29, 2008

Hey,

I wanted to say a little more about Boyd Coddington who passed away yesterday at 63 years of age.

Boyd started playing with cars seriously at 13 yrs. NeitherHe, nor anyone else could possibly imagine where this passion would lead.Boyd operated a gas station in Utah for awhile and later went to work for Disneyland. He worked there during the day and was busy at night working on and building automobiles. He worked on and customized 1932 Fords and fabricated car wheels. He got up to $2000 a wheel which was big money then and not bad even today. He got a following and he was living his dream. He designed and built custom cars and was getting as much as $500,000 for his work at his peak.Hard to imagine people who could afford that but, they are out there.Boyd built “Cadzilla” for Billy Gibson of ZZ Top. The custom was designed around a Cadillac as the name suggests.

Boyd got to t.v. on the Discovery Channel with his show American Hot Rod. I saw the show a number of times. The show was something Boyd loved doing. It is important to note that Boyd also mentored Jesse James and Chip Foose both of whom went on to become stars in their own right.

We will always remember Boyd for his work and for the Hawaian shirts that he wore every day.
