If motorcycles generally get better mileage than cars, and if everyone is so concerned about the price of gasoline these days, why are motorcycle sales cratering instead of skyrocketing?
It’s the economy, stupid (with apologies to Bill Clinton).

Harley Davidson Reducing Dealer Inventories - A Positive Sign

July 21, 2008

In recent years, many analysts have accused Harley (HOG) of “channel-stuffing”. Basically, Harley records revenue (and thus earnings) when a dealer receives a bike. But if Harley ships more bikes to a dealer than the dealer sells to its customers, then the problem is that Harley’s earnings are artificially high (because they’ve “stuffed” the dealer with extra bikes), and sooner or later they’ll have to cut shipments to reduce dealer inventory.

Scooters

SPEEDIER AND FUEL EFFICIENT, SCOOTER SALES TAKE OFF July 11, 2008

ON A SWELTERING Santa Monica street, the glare of chrome and steel glints off the shades of action-film actor Gunner Wright. It’s almost lunchtime, and he’s idling at a light, surrounded by hulking Hummers and polished Priuses — all futilely flashing their turn signals. Luckily for this former motocross racer, he’s not driving a car; he’s sporting a scooter, a smallish, automatic-transmission motorbike that can weave through rows of SUVs like a mouse in a maze. Sure enough, as the light turns green, he razors through the gridlock and whizzes onto Olympic Boulevard, out of sight.

Americans are scooting in numbers not seen in more than two decades. Gone are the two-stroke putt-putt engines of old (think power mowers and chain saws); these days some scooter engines are powerful enough to approach those of small Harleys. And consumers have noticed: Annual sales have jumped past 130,000. While that may be the average number of SUVs sold in any given month, it’s triple the number of scooter sales in 2000.
