Plenty of visitors to this site have never shown an interest in motorcycles beforehand. Therefore it’s always cool when you find that some keep coming back because we piqued their interest.

Maybe they stumbled across it while they were looking for theatre tickets or bypassed Partypoker.com, Facebook or something. So if you are new and want to know the first baby steps towards riding your own motorcycle, here is a guide for you to take your baby steps.

Number One – Grab a Learners Motorcycle book

You can always look through our site to get the lowdown on what to do, what not to do, and the ‘what if’s’ of riding a motorcycle, but the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) provide a guide to learning how to ride, normally free of charge. The book is not only good for teaching you the basics before you get started, it will also help you pass your computer/written motorcycle test. Other areas of the world will vary of course.

Number Two – Get a learners license

Licensing varies dependent on where you are in the world , but within the US you need a learners permit before you can take any courses i.e the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Course or even attempt to ride on the road. I strongly recommend you don’t ride without a license. The consequences should you have an accident will be more severe without one.

Number Three – Get proper riding gear

Don’t go cheap. Cheap stuff costs less for a reason. If you can afford all leather gear then brilliant. It was designed for riding and will benefit your safety the most. If not though, jeans, a leather motorcycle jacket and gloves will be a safe alternative.

Number Four – Go for your license

Once you go for your license, take it easy for the first year or so. As a beginner, you are more likely to make mistakes and don’t want to get too cocky. Just remember to discipline yourself, be safe and above all else – Have fun!

Legendary Buffalo Chip S.D.(December 1, 2010) – The Legendary Buffalo Chip, Schwinn and Pee-wee Herman have once again joined forces to help local South Dakota charities during the 2010 South Dakota State Cyclocross Championships and Miss Chippie ‘Cross event being held at the Legendary Buffalo Chip on Saturday, December 4.Cyclocross racers and spectators are taking over the Sturgis hot spot for the highly-anticipated cyclocross event during which the Legendary Buffalo Chip will be auctioning several custom-made bicycles to benefit the Kids & Chrome Foundation which supports the Black Hills Children’s Home Society and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame.

As part of last summer’s “Pee-wee’s Big Sturgis Adventure” at The Legendary Buffalo Chip, a mix of nationally renowned and local South Dakota motorcycle and bicycle builders took part in an “extreme makeover” of Pee-wee Herman’s iconic 1947 Schwinn at the 70th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Schwinn donated several TRANSIT 3-Speed Electric bicycles to be redesigned and fabricated especially for Pee-wee. Each participant had the opportunity and only a few weeks to transform these electric bikes into high-tech, tricked out, ultra cool rides uniquely suited for Pee-wee Herman.

Participating fabricators included Steve “Brewdude” Garn of BREW Bikes, LLC who has been building custom bicycle frames since 1987; Bryan Schimke of TPJ Customs who started his custom bike building business in his garage and now builds only handmade bikes with the highest quality parts to withstand the abuse of the real world; Jesse Hansen, founder of Rushmore Mountain Sports, everyone’s favorite local bike and outdoor shop located in beautiful downtown Spearfish, South Dakota; and John Quinlin of Recycled Cycles which started out in 1978 selling just used and reconditioned bicycles and today is a full service Schwinn dealer located in Fort Collins, Colorado.

All entries were presented to Pee-wee who ultimately choose Steve Garn’s “Pee-wee Rider” complete with a red frame, American flag paint job, a skull mounted on the head tube in between the front forks and many other extraordinarily detailed designs. Pee-wee then inaugurated the bike as Captain of the Buffalo Chip’s Annual Legends Charity Ride.

The bicycle built by Brian Schimke of TPJ Customs was then auctioned on the spot for charity. Scwhinn also generously donated 60 new bicycles and helmets to the Black Hills Children Home Society, giving each child a new bike to ride.

This weekend the remaining two bikes from builders John Quinlin of Recycled Cycles and Jesse Hansen of Rushmore Mountain Sports will now be soaking up the spotlight as they are ridden around the course by Rod Woodruff and Jim Burgess and then auctioned to benefit the Kids & Chrome Foundation during the 2010 South Dakota State Cyclocross Championships and Miss Chippie ‘Cross events being held at the Legendary Buffalo Chip.

The Cyclocross Championships will be held Saturday, December 4 at 10 a.m. and will feature the region’s fastest men and women competing on their bicycles through a maze of mud, hills and man-made obstacles. Top racers from each division will be awarded prizes during a Champion’s Ceremony consisting of cash and merchandise from the area’s top cycling and outdoor adventure stores. In addition, during the eagerly anticipated Cyclocross Championships the fabricated bikes that were not chosen by Pee-wee will be ridden around the Cyclocross track and auctioned off for charity.

Baker Drivetrain Model Search

Each year the BAKER Calendar is a highly collected piece for most guys’ garages, jail cells and bathroom walls. We carefully pick a bike each year that features our brand new product of the year, and then hand select a young lady to adorn the bike.

This year our bike is being built in house by Chad – one of our Engineering Crew and it’s already looking killer! It’s going to be a tank-shift Panhead, with some really cool new BAKER innovations – shhh!

This year we are in the process of interviewing models and thought we’d open the doors to all the public. We are welcoming portfolios from professional and amateur models alike.
